Expedition Therapy is a structured, intensive, hands-on, experiential, solution-focused outdoor adventure experience that unfolds in the striking topography of the desert southwest. The Expedition Therapy team of experienced therapists and instructors specializes in working with emerging young adults age 18+ who have yet to find a productive and intentional path in life. At Expedition Therapy, students learn teamwork, organizational and time management skills, as well as how to plan and lead an expedition step by step. Overcoming challenges faced while canyoneering, rock climbing or backpacking fosters self-confidence and leadership.
Expedition Therapy is a giant step beyond the inherent limitations of traditional wilderness therapy programs. We treat our students like the adults that they are – we challenge them, teach them real-world skills, encourage their creativity, and provide them with ample opportunities to give back to the community. At Expedition Therapy, we help young adults discover the inner focus, direction and motivation they need to move themselves forward in their lives.
The Expedition Therapy experience is life changing. Through exciting outdoor adventures, individualized therapy sessions and team problem solving, each course enables students to develop a firm foundation of confidence, self-efficacy and personal leadership. After a series of wilderness expeditions, students come away with some or all of the following:
Expedition Therapy offers a wide variety of exciting and challenging expeditions in many of the world’s most beautiful natural locations. Working with others to tackle wilderness expeditions within a therapeutic framework stimulates personal growth and a sense of community. Unlike more traditional therapeutic approaches, our program provides hands-on, experiential learning opportunities. This approach has proven effective for young adults and is at the heart of our program. Our expeditions include:
Our Therapeutic Expedition Mentality® is an innovative, clinical, hands-on, approach to leadership, personal growth, group dynamics, and expedition education. The Expedition Therapy curriculum emphasizes the learning and mastering of skill sets such as self-awareness, time management, and group dynamics, as well as a proactive approach to relapse prevention. Our variety of challenging expeditions provides our students with opportunities to learn, teach, and lead in the rugged backcountry of southern Utah. All of these valuable skills are directly transferable to life.
Specific substance abuse, isolation, excessive gaming and other self-destructive issues are treated through regular sessions with Expedition Therapy’s State-Licensed Substance Use Disorder Counselor. This adds an extra dimension to our intensive process of supporting young adults as they learn and master skills that can be applied to whatever comes next, restoring them back to a healthier, cleaner and sober lifestyle. The Therapeutic Expedition Mentality® is designed for individuals who have a desire to grow far beyond what they believe they can accomplish, finding a deeper meaning and purpose in their lives.
Personalized care defines the Expedition Therapy admissions process. We believe that participants and their families should be actively involved in deciding if our program is a good fit. During the process, our administrative team and therapist meet with participants and parents. Once the student, parents and therapist have decided that Expedition Therapy is the best choice, the application process begins. Students are required to complete a health form and therapeutic history as part of their application.
During orientation, students learn the basics of wilderness safety, campsite setup, backpack fitting and Leave No Trace® principles. All-inclusive gear packages are provided for a flat fee. Expedition Therapy has a Medical Director on staff to ensure the safety and well being of all students.
